Just for reference:

A nerd excels in academic or earnest subjects, forfeiting physical and social pursuits to master purely cerebral activities.

A geek is exemplified by a functioning obsessive mastery over pursuits socially perceived as trivial, avoiding physical and social interaction to devote his time to these pursuits.

I thought Napoleon Dynamite said it best. Geeks have skills while nerds are socially inept outcasts like Napoleon Dynamite.

But geeks are also usually socially inept while Nerds have research skills. *looks around wistfully as if on a Zen koan stupor*

Isn't that supposed to be the other way around?

Anyway, geeks can be socially inept but generally we have skills. Nerds don't.

It tends to boil down between practical skills versus book knowledge but this is not always the case. Personally, I use these analogues: Manga Geek versus 18th Century English Poetry Nerd, Computer Geek versus Mathematics Nerd, et al. Applied Mathematics and Information Theory in computing, of course, are gray areas.
