It tends to boil down between practical skills versus book knowledge but this is not always the case. Personally, I use these analogues: Manga Geek versus 18th Century English Poetry Nerd, Computer Geek versus Mathematics Nerd, et al. Applied Mathematics and Information Theory in computing, of course, are gray areas.
